Golf on Cape Cod
There are nearly 3 dozen public golf courses and many private golf courses on Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, offering various options for all players. There are scenic ocean side layouts, wooded tree lined courses, and rolling greens; there are tough tests for the serious golfer and challenges for the weekend warriors.
The region is also rich in golf history, from one of the oldest courses in the country (Highland Golf Links in North Truro) to some of the most exclusive private clubs in the nation (John F. Kennedy called the Hyannisport Club home when he was president, and Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, the late speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was a member at Eastward Ho! in Chatham.)
If you are short on time or don’t hit long you might want to consider the Par 3 courses at Blue Rock in South Yarmouth, Paul Harney in Falmouth, or Holly Ridge in South Sandwich. While every hole is a manageable par 3, you’ll need to be accurate with your irons and have a steady putting stroke.
If you’re looking for a championship challenge that will require shot-making with every club in your bag, Dennis Pines in South Dennis, Ballymeade in Falmouth, and Captains in Harwich will provide a test.
The islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket also have public treats worth savoring – Farm Neck on the Vineyard and Miacomet on Nantucket, to name two – and a leisurely ferry boat ride is a nice way to relax and prepare for a day on the links.
Because of the popularity of the game, it’s advisable to plan ahead and call the local courses to arrange tee times. Many courses also offer reduced rates on weekdays or in the afternoon.
